5th Grade Science Fair

5th Grade students showed off their knowledge during last week's science fair! There were a wide range of topics represented, and many teachers were impressed at the level of care and enthusiasm students put into their presentations. Way to go, 5th grade!

NEW NEWS:

  • Kinder Prep is now accepting preschool applications for next school year! Reserve your spot! Also, bring a friend or neighbor of a preschooler and check out the Open House (for both new and returning families!) on February 16 from 10:30am-1:00pm or 4:30-6:00pm. Meet the staff, see the classrooms, and learn more about Kinder Prep! 

  • Many LILA yearbooks are still available! Cost: $25 - Order Online at www.balfour.com. If paying by check, please include an envelope marked with your student's name, grade, teacher, and "For yearbook."

  • Interested in trying to keep up with your child's blossoming Mandarin skills? Try the free, game-based ChineseSkill app. You can access it at the AppStore: http://bit.do/UU2X and Google Play: http://bit.do/UU24. Model the love of languages in your home, as well as providing it in your child's school experience!  

  • The Forest Lake Girls basketball program will host Youth Night on Friday, January 30 at  7:15pm at Forest Lake High School. All area youth are invited, and the first 100 kids will get a free t-shirt. Root beer floats wlll be available after the game.

  • CAAM Chinese Dance Theater  is celebrating the Year of the Ram with "Dancing in Chinese Opera," Saturday Jan. 31 and Sunday, Feb. 1 at the O'Shaughnessy Auditorium. Check out a sneak peak of the performance here, or order tickets to see it live.

  • Check the after-school activities page for all the ways to stay involved at and around LILA! This week the Chess Club flyer has been updated with next session's dates.

 

 

FROM THE PTO:

  • It's the middle of winter...and that means it is time for the Winter Plunge!  Every year LILA Language Ambassadors, staff, and students jump into the Forest Lake to brave the cold and support a great cause!  How can you get involved?  Either pledge to your student's Language Ambassador or teacher, or join us! 
    • The grade level that donates the most to their Language Ambassadors will win an ice cream treat party for the whole grade.
    • Every Language Ambassador that gets at least $75 in pledges will earn a t-shirt showing that they survived this Minnesota rite of passage!
    • The Parent and Student who fundraise the most and jump will receive one of the new LILA t-shirts.
    • We hope to see you on February 21st around noon to show your support!
  • Please remember to complete your LACE  (Language Ambassador and Classroom Enrichment) form and turn it in as soon as possible. Thank you for your participation in continuing LILA's committment to high-quality education!
  • Drop-In Parent Volunteers - Would you like to meet fellow LILA parents and assist LILA staff? Please join us on Thursday mornings from 8am-10am to help our wonderful teachers with copying, laminating, and special projects! No need to sign-up, just show-up! REMINDER: LILA Family Directory Use

Parents, please use the LILA family directory for school and community-building purposes only, such as arranging play dates, sending birthday invitations or thank-you cards, or creating student lists for Valentines.  We appreciate that most of you have shared your address, phone, and email information for the directory. To safeguard our exceptional LILA community participation, please refrain from using the information for sales campaigns, networking, or other business-related work. LILA offers many volunteering opportunities, classroom functions, organizations, and events where we encourage you to meet other LILA parents. PAST BUT PERTINENT:

  • Save the date for the 6th Annual LILA Snow Tubing Event at Trollhaugen! It will take place Thursday, February 19th from 5-9pm. Build community with other LILA families and take advantage of Minnesota winter fun!
  • The 6th Annual Gala Spring Fling Dinner is coming up! Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 25th. The event will feature a silent and live auction and will raise money for the LILA foundation. Tanners Brook Golf Club, Forest Lake. Invitation to follow. 
  • The after-school tutoring page has been updated with more Chinese tutors available. Click the link to see their names, pictures, and descriptions, and to contact them with questions. They would love to share their language and culture, as well as boost academic support!
  • Experience the same immersion that your kids have at school! Teachers Carlos Pilan and Yao Hsia will be offering a parent immersion class (pick Spanish or Chinese) starting February 2nd! Space is limited, so register right away and brush up (or try out) your language skills. 
  • Be inquirers and risk-takers at the Mall of America! The Chinese Heritage Foundation will present its eighth annual festival, A Passage to China, at the Rotunda, Sears Court, and Southeast Court on March 14-15. Activities include games, Chinese cooking, lion dancing, crafts, and cultural performances. 11am-5pm.
