At Lakes International, we value our hard-earned reputation for quality, for high standards, and for pedagogical leadership. We achieve our goals by working with partners and by actively involving our stakeholders, particularly teachers. Today, we're one of the few schools in the country to offer both Spanish and Mandarin Chinese immersion with the acclaimed International Baccalaureate curriculum.

The Minnesota Department of Education acknowledges the benefits of the International Baccalaureate program, stating on its website, "International Baccalaureate (IB) is recognized as a superior education, preparing students for rigorous academic work so they may succeed at postsecondary institutions around the world. The program encourages students to think from an international perspective, while first developing an understanding of their own cultural and national identity. Spanish And Chinese Language Immersion Instruction

Immersion instruction requires thoughtful facial expressions, exaggerated body movements, and repetition to help convey the intended meanings and build students’ language skills, especially for students in their early academic studies. Teachers expertly incorporate this aspect of communication while speaking the target language, either Spanish or Chinese. They deliver lessons in the immersion language for the core subject areas, including social studies, mathematics, science and technology, the arts, and physical education.

Students become literate in the target language while developing their English skills through class lessons beginning in second grade and daily at-home reading for all grades.

Bilingualism allows students to meet and interact with people of other countries and cultures, often bringing greater understanding and appreciation between people. And no other method of second-language instruction has proven more successful than full immersion, especially for K-6.

As an IB World School, we believe in the international mission of this program. We promote intercultural understanding and respect, not as an alternative to a sense of cultural and national identity, but as an essential part of life in the 21st century.

We aim to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through international-mindedness and respect.

Our program encourages students to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. Through our curriculum, we explore who we are in relation to the beliefs and values of people across the globe and throughout history, and investigate different communities and cultures to discover what it means to be human. We explore relationships within and between communities across the planet, and find out who we share the planet with and examine our responsibilities towards others.

As an accredited IB World School, LILA meets or exceeds all standards established by the IBO Primary Years Programme, as well as those set by the Minnesota Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Education.
