Language Learning With New Friends

camp dragon 2016

At Camp Dragon, a day camp designed for American and Chinese students who have completed FIFTH GRADE and up, you’ll learn to speak each other’s language and gain an appreciation for each other’s culture. The program includes 12 days of friendship-building and memory-making activities and event.

Using a buddy system, visiting Chinese students provide small-group lessons and lead activities and projects for American students. Themed learning experiences for teens, led by teens, are usually scheduled for weekday mornings. Afternoons for all ages are set aside for field trips, sightseeing, and other adventures. The weekend offers unscheduled free-time, allowing Chinese guests to explore and practice language skills with their host families and new friends. Chinese students stay with host families from the Lakes International Language Academy community. Host families and U.S. students provide their own transportation to the camp each day (sorry, no bus service).

Important RSchool Today Registration Information

Do not click the “Pay Now” button. LILA uses FeePay for payments; if you click “Pay Now” on RSchool Today, it will ask for a credit card (which we cannot take) and it won’t let you finish your registration. It's also possible that you will get charged twice if you click the Pay Now button. Again, we aren't set up to receive payments through RSchool so all payments need to be completed through FeePay.

Click the “Pay Later” button and pay through FeePay. It will show that you owe money on your RSchool Today account, but don’t worry about that. We are currently working with RSchool Today to get the payment buttons removed. Thank you for your patience!

Items Needed To Participate In A Sport

  • RSchool Today registration
  • Payment on FeePay
  • No outstanding activity/athletics payments or equipment/uniforms not returned from previous seasons
  • A physical form uploaded onto RSchool Today (these are good for 3 years); physicals are required by the MN High School League
  • Any equipment/gear as requested by your coach

Check Activity Scheduler For Game Times & More

After you register on Activity Scheduler, you'll receive automatic notifications about activities, athletics, and clubs of your choosing. The info there will be updated regularly with practice times, games, competitions, etc.

• All practice and game cancellations and other announcements will be communicated via email and/or social media.
• Game schedules will be released when they are finalized.

Cancellation Notice: LILA strives to maintain low activity fees. We base the fees, in part, on anticipated registrations. Students will be required to pay for half of the student athletic fee, if they choose to quit after they have participated in any of the first week practices. If a student attends any practice after the first week, and then decides to quit, they will be responsible for the entire student athletic fee.

Model United Nations
Grades 7-12
Advisor: Jennifer May
Starts Monday, February 26
All LILA students in grades 7-12 are welcome to participate. Model UN is a short-term extracurricular opportunity for students to learn more about global issues while researching, role playing, compromising, and working together. Around 800 students from schools across Minnesota will participate in the conference. Interested students will be assigned a country to represent and then they will research 2 topics based on their committee assignment, and they will represent their country’s views on those topics at the conference. Last year's topics included: proliferation of chemical weapons, foreign involvement in elections, combating sex tourism, currency manipulation, oceanic biosphere depletion, gender segregation, tax evasion by multinational corporations, colonization of space, galactic weaponry, control of the internet and more. While these sound like deep topics for students, they did an amazing job not only learning about the topics, but in expanding their own personal views, as well as understanding the views of the country they represent. More information can be found on the attached flyer or at the YMCA website
Meetings 4:30-5:45 in the Headwaters Computer Lab on Mon., Feb. 26; Mon., March 5; Mon., March 26; Mon., April 2
